Reverse engineering on the basis of 3D scanning data

Is it possible to import an .stl file, which was obtained with a 3D scanner, to a CAD-system? The engineers who want to save time on building 3D models from scratch or measurements by traditional means often ask about it. RangeVision’s engineer Dmitry Telegin answers this question in the series of tutorials, demonstrating the process of building parametric model from the uploading of an .stl-file to a CAD-system to the obtaining of the end result.

Not all measurements are available by traditional means because of complex surfaces of parts. That is why 3D scanners are increasingly used to obtain precise data on the geometry of objects.

The main purpose of these tutorials is to show that .stl-files which were obtained with 3D scanner may be uploaded to CAD-systems such as Catia, GOM Inspect, Kompas 3D, SolidWorks, AutoCAD and others for the further refinement.

3D-modeling in CAD-systems using scanning data is called reverse engineering. This method is widely used in production, medicine (e.g. in dentistry and orthopedics), quality control, archiving of geometry data, creation of the technical documentation. The obtained CAD-models are widely used in the production of the parts whose documentation was lost for some reasons.

In the tutorials Dmitry will demonstrate the work in several popular CAD-systems. Each tutorial will focus on the particular software product. The first one will demonstrate the combination of Catia and GOM Inspect.
