3D scanning of Mousson Atelier jewelry
3D scanning allows jewelers to accelerate the production of jewelry, which is important in modern life and in an increasingly competitive environment. Jewellery workshops simply can not afford to waste time and effort, carrying out orders, while realizing that most of the customers are not ready to pay for a manual labour. 3D modeling and further cutting wax models on CNC machines helps to save time and, thus, to make more work.
RangeVision’s regular customer Mousson Atelier creates jewelry in a modern and classic style. Mousson Atelier have modern and high-tech manufacturing jewelry, so at certain stages they use a 3D scanner RangeVision PRO 2M. RangeVision PRO 3D scanner package content includes 25 mm lenses, automatic turntable and calibration field 40x40 mm for scanning of small items.

How goes the process of creating jewelry from Mousson Atelier? We are ready to solve the mystery! In this article we are going to tell you how 3D models of Mousson Atelier’s jewelry are created through the help of RangeVision PRO 2M 3D scanner.
In this particular case the objects in the photo are made of semitransparent green wax, so before scanning they must be covered with a special matting spray. This procedure allows to avoid the refraction of light, which can lead to distortion in 3D model.
In order to fix the object in the center of the turntable, craftsmen use modeling clay.
Jewelers from Saint Petersburg create a new project with the choice of a turntable, note its axis and set the necessary parameters depending on the complexity of the object - the number of turns of the table and the angle of rotation.
Feature that allows to specify the scan settings on the automatic turntable is very important in digitizing such items as jewelry. The increase in turns of the table provides greater 3D resolution in digitizing complex shapes.
The turntable provides automatic alignment of the fragments in the correct position and a coherent 3D model as a result. Scanning on the automatic turntable increases the speed of digitizing in 3 times due to parallelization of processes. While one scan is being processed, another one is being snapped and so on.
After scanning of the one side of the item, the jeweler turns it to digitize other areas that are not visible from above. Subsequently, these fragments will be combined in the RangeVision ScanCenter software that comes with any 3D scanner from RangeVision.
In order to combine a group of scans one of the three methods is used: automatic algorithm of meshes registration by geometry of the object, by three points or manual. Depending on the size and shape of jewelry the craftsman can choose the appropriate method of alignment of scans, which is convenient.
3D resolution plays the key role in the production of jewelry. It shows what is the minimum item in the object will be visible on the 3D model. 3D resolution of RangeVision PRO 2M is 0.03 - 0.3 mm. Flexibility of RangeVision PRO 2M 3D scanner allows to achieve maximum 3D resolution in digitizing a miniature items (less than 3 cm). The craftsman can create an accurate 3D model of jewelry with a complex geometry by means of changing the lenses - the scanning zones.
In the picture below you can see the result of 3D scanning. Jewelers make all the necessary initial treatment in RangeVision ScanСenter software. Voids that are usually present in places that are difficult to get by 3D scanning are filled in Leios software. You can also apply smoothing or any other processing of final 3D model.
With RangeVision PRO 3D scanner jewelry makers were getting the resolution down small enough to read clean and delicate details on small rings and earrings. You may watch Mousson Imag final here.
