Control of the conformity of the injection mold by analyzing the cast part

The cast part was compared with the CAD standard of the injection mold to identify deviations.
Our partner, the Italian company INKAY TECHNOLOGY SRL, has implemented a 3D scanning project of the gearbox housing for one of the leaders of the automotive industry.

The task was to assess the compliance of the cast body part received from the supplier with the original CAD file and decide on the need to refine the mold for casting in case of deviations.

The scanned object had a complex shape and an abundance of arbitrary shapes, so it was difficult to measure it using conventional methods. The RangeVision Standard+ 3D scanner was used to solve this problem.

At the first stage, the outer part of the case was scanned. Markers were used for ease of operation: due to their competent distribution, the scanning object could be placed in front of the scanner by any party, and the scans were stitched automatically.
In the second stage, to scan the inside, the gearbox housing was divided into two parts using a high-precision milling cutter. Each half was scanned separately.
At the third stage, all scanned parts were combined. At the same time, the groups of scans of the inner part were stitched according to the geometry of the outer side of the same part scanned at the first stage, and the incision line did not reduce the overall accuracy of the final STL model.
The resulting model was directly compared with the original CAD file, on the basis of which the injection mold was prepared.
A color map of the geometry deviations was obtained. This comparison method is clear, allows you to easily interpret the measurement results and quickly use them to refine the injection mold or optimize the casting process to obtain finished parts of the desired quality. The accuracy of the match was checked both by points and by sections.
As a result of the work done, the injection mold was finalized in accordance with the customer’s requirements, and the parts were put into production in compliance with all tolerances.

RangeVision is grateful to INKAY Technology SRL for the materials provided.
