Reverse engineering of a propeller for UAVs
Increasingly, engineers use a combination of several software products to design mathematical models. How does it work? We will tell you about this using the example of one of the companies involved in designing unmanned aerial vehicles. This equipment is used in geodesy - building an area plan, mining, agriculture, construction, monitoring of high-rise buildings. It is not uncommon for UAVs to be used in aerial photography and even in automated delivery.
Initially, the development company was tasked with designing a new propeller with certain characteristics for the UAV. But later, in order to save time, it was decided to copy a similar propeller for further refinement and improvement of product characteristics. The contractor for the order was DE-ENGINEERING, which provides 3D scanning, reverse engineering and design services.
In order to avoid the lengthy process of building a parametric model from scratch, the company's specialists decided to resort to 3D scanning technology. In their work, they used the RangeVision PRO 2M 3D scanner, which allows them to obtain high-precision data thanks to structured illumination technology.
Since the surface of the part was glossy, the company's specialists applied a matting spray on it. AZURE BP-470 light filters were used as auxiliary tools for scanning. As a result of digitization of the propeller and subsequent processing of the scanning data in the ScanCenter program, a .stl file was obtained, which can be imported into any CAD program for further refinement.
DE-ENGINEERING uses the Catia computer-aided design software. As a result, the scanning and post-processing of the scans took 1.5 hours. The reverse engineering of the model in the Catia program takes 8 hours. The quality of the result was tested in the Polyworks program.
This usage example shows that RangeVision 3D scanners are suitable for performing reverse engineering in automated CAD modeling programs. The format of the scan data allows you to import them into any software for further refinement. 3D scanning using RangeVision PRO 2M allows you to save time on designing a CAD model from scratch, since the data obtained has high accuracy and detail. CAD models are versatile and used in many industries.
We thank DE-Engineering for the materials provided!
