On September 5, 2025, St. Petersburg hosted one of the most anticipated events in the Russian community of designers, designers and modelers — the KOMPAScon 5.0 engineering Festival, organized by ASCON, the developer of the most famous Russian three—dimensional design system COMPASS-3D. This is the fifth annual festival, and this year it was held for the first time in St. Petersburg, a city that embodies an engineering miracle in itself.
KOMPAScon 5.0, unlike most industry and professional events, is a real festival. This is a vibrant, dynamic event filled not only with benefits, but also with entertainment. A meeting place for hardware and software developers with end users, a place for communication between specialists who are passionate about 3D design and modeling, a place to gain the most relevant knowledge and exchange experiences. And all this is done in the most informal setting possible.

Engineering Quest

The central event of KOMPAScon is an engineering quest. Each participant receives a waybill with a list of "stations". At each station, he performs tasks related in one way or another to designing, modeling, and working with 3D equipment and engineering software. Each completed task is marked with a sticker, and those who complete the quest can count on prizes and souvenirs. In addition to the reward, the process itself is extremely exciting and allows you to gain a lot of practical knowledge and skills in a few hours.
This time, the participants armed themselves with guidebooks to engineering St. Petersburg with a dozen themed attractions. Of the 306 participants in the festival, 215 people completed the quest in full.
At the RangeVision booth, participants mastered the technology and techniques of 3D scanning from project settings to exporting a polygonal model. There were so many applicants that perhaps some participants simply did not have time to complete the task.
To demonstrate the capabilities of the RangeVision PRO II high-precision optical 3D scanner, we chose a thematic "St. Petersburg engineering" object — a scale model of the Palace Bridge. The scanner accurately captured the smallest (thinner than a millimeter) details of the model.
In the second half of the stand, engineering tourists practiced manually scanning a larger object, a boat anchor, courtesy of the festival organizers. Using the RangeVision Helix 3D scanner, everyone managed to digitize the anchor quickly and accurately.

Measurement Tournament

KOMPAScon hosted 11 lectures and master classes dedicated not only to solving applied problems in COMPASS-3D, but also broader and even philosophical issues of engineering design, reverse engineering and R&D.
Artyom Krasovsky, Director of Development at RangeVision, delivered his report in the lecture section. He spoke about an experiment conducted by the joint efforts of RangeVision and ASCON specialists — reverse engineering of the smartphone case in the latest 24th version of COMPASS-3D using new convenient tools for working with STL models. In the Measurement Tournament, or rather, in a Deadly Battle, two approaches to reverse engineering fought — manual measurements and 3D scanning. The result is quite expected: a 3D scanner saves at least 30% of the working time during design, and the more complex the geometry of the object, the higher the efficiency of 3D scanning.

Prizes!

The numbers of all the winners of the engineering quest took part in the prize draw from the festival’s partners. RangeVision, as the general partner of the event, also prepared gifts, including one of the main ones, which is optimally suited for an engineer’s vacation in St. Petersburg — a portable, wide-angle, wireless 3D scanner Neopoint Max. This is an excellent tool with which, if desired, you can immediately scan a monument, a small structure and other engineering landmark of the northern capital. The prize was solemnly presented to the lottery winner at the award ceremony.

Conclusion

KOMPAScon 5.0 turned out to be an expectedly crowded, extremely lively, diverse and simply beautiful event. In addition to the main activities, the festival included
  • the "3D-TRP" competition with the opportunity to win an annual license from COMPASS-3D Home;
  • thematic photo zone, gallery of graphic works and caricaturists;
  • the opportunity to send yourself a paper postcard from St. Petersburg;
  • real products designed in COMPASS 3D: a Quattro racing car (the lightest in its class), a dome chair, a robot veteran of the "Battle of Robots", a retro lamp;
  • branded merchandise store.
Will RangeVision participate in KOMPAScon 6.0? Of course.
We thank the organizers of the festival, ASCON LLC, for the photos from the festival
