Geomagic Design X: Grid alignment and editing

We continue to introduce you to the lessons on reverse engineering in Geomagic Design X.
In this article, we will look at the following topics:
  • mesh alignment and transformation
  • , Mesh Healing, Removing elements and filling holes,
  • how to use the functions Healing Wizard, Defeat, Sew Boundaries, Fill holes, Add Bridge, Fill Gulf, Rewrap,
  • Mesh Optimization using Enhance Shape, Global Remesh, Optimize Mesh, Decimal and Subdivide, Smart Brush, Smooth, Decimal and Enhance Shape,
  • mesh editing tools: Split, Offset, Trim, Fix Normal,
  • how to add a mesh texture from an image file,
  • surface modeling using Geomagic Design X,
  • how to get a solid body from a grid in Geomagic Design X.

Alignment of the mesh in the coordinate system

1. The first step is to automatically divide the grid into subnets
2. The second is the definition of the necessary primitives. The plane will define the base plane of X
3. The auxiliary vector - the axis of the cylinder - will help determine the origin of coordinates.
4. The point of intersection of this vector with the plane will be the origin of coordinates.
5. The second plane will determine the direction of the X-axis, which will run along the line of intersection of the two planes.
6. The third step is alignment. Select the 3-2-1 method and specify the constructed primitives.
7. Check the result of the operation by switching views

Grid Transformation

1. Transform Scan Data allows you to change the position of an object in the coordinate system, to change its size by proportional scaling...
...or scale and deform along the axes according to the matrix

Treatment, removal of elements and filling of holes

1. Healing Wizard will analyze and correct structural errors
2. Defeat removes parts of the grid and fills the gap taking into account the curvature
3. Small gaps will be filled by Sew Boundaries
4. Fill Hole is better suited for large ones.
5. Add Bridge will help you manually connect the torn edge of the object before filling it in.
6. Using Fill Gulf, you can fill the open border of the grid.
7. Tools for removing grid parts may also be useful to fill the gap correctly.
8. We use Rewrap to automatically fill in all gaps.

Geometry optimization

1. The program also includes various optimizers of structure and geometry. Enhance Shape sharpens corners and smoothes smooth surfaces.
2. Global Remesh rebuilds the grid with the specified average edge length of the triangles and fills in the small holes
3. Optimize Mesh optimizes the structure and shape of the mesh according to the set parameters
4. You can also change the number of triangles using the Decimal and Subdivide commands.
5. Smooth smooths the entire grid with a given degree
6. Smart Brush works similarly to the described smoothing, thinning, and enhancement functions, but it allows you to change the grid locally.
7. One of the modes of operation of the brush is local deformation

Grid Editing Tools

1. Split cuts the grid using a plane, custom polyline, or other objects
3. Offset creates a new grid at a distance from the existing one.
4. Trim allows you to select a separate area using curves and crop the selected area.
5. Thicken builds a closed shell with a given thickness and direction
6. Fix Normal corrects the direction of the grid normals
7. You can add a texture from a file to the mesh.
